Five minutes later in Dean Tremaine’s office

Dean Tremaine watched quietly as Judias and Maceo skimmed through a box of information concerning the disappearances of her students. In the box were pictures of the missing students, accounts of eyewitnesses and photographs of the scenes where they disappeared.

“So, what are we looking at here with this Nolan Nomore?” the knight asked, looking at Judias.

“The Redfields were a family of warlocks who ruled the Lost Dark Realm with iron fists, bloody boots and an appetite for fairies—and, shockingly, ogres.” Judias stated.

Dean Tremaine listened closely as this information was brand new to her.

“Nolan…”

“Please!” Dean Tremaine interjected quickly. “Let’s not say that name again. The students believe that if you say his name three times he’ll appear, and we don’t want that.”

“Like Bloody Mary?” asked Maceo.

Dean Tremaine nodded.

Judias rolled his eyes and continued. “Nomore was a jester for the Redfields. No one knew where he came from or if he had any immediate family. He just showed up one day and the king hired him to make jokes and brighten up their moods. But there was a side to this jester. Nomore kidnapped witches to torture them—and to drink their blood.”

“He’s a vampire?” Dean Tremaine asked nervously.

Judias let out a loud chuckle and shook his head. “Not a vampire at all. He just drank the blood of witches. Because magic is in our blood, he knew to obtain that magic, he would have to drink our blood.”

“And it gave him magic?” the knight asked, as he scrunched his nose in disgust.

Judias nodded. “It did. But not to the extent he was hoping for. He only got the magic temporarily.”

“Wow.” Dean Tremaine gasped in fascination. “I did not know witches had magic within their blood. I thought their magic came from books or family heirlooms.”

Judias had no idea how Tremaine was a Dean of Magic School if she knew nothing about witches.

“Yes, it’s one of the many reasons vampires are repulsed by us. To them our magic smells like rotten eggs or rotten meat. Now back to Nolan, are any of the missing students, witches?”

Tremaine shook her head slowly. “We tried to do a few outreach programs to enroll students who identify as witches, but we haven’t heard from any of them.”

Can you blame them? Judias thought.

“Do you think we’re dealing with the actual Nolan, and he somehow stayed alive throughout all these centuries?” Maceo asked.

Judias looked at Tremaine, “You mention there’s an urban legend about Nolan. What is it?”

“Ah yes.” Dean Tremaine straightened her posture in the seat, ecstatic to finally be involved in the conversation. “The urban legend states that when someone chants Nolan Nomore three times, he appears. When he appears, he is able to grant the caller their greatest desire.”

“In exchange for what?” asked the witch. Judias had been alive long enough to know that when it comes to granting desires or wishes, there is always a catch.

Dean Tremaine shrugged her shoulders at the question. “That’s all I was told.
